A walk through the historic center of 19th-century Petersburg, where fashion was a true art and Nevsky Prospect was considered the main runway of the Empire. You will learn about various trading traditions, fashion houses, outstanding couturiers, the first department stores, and the secrets of clothing and headwear.
More about this excursion
Our journey will begin at Gostiny Dvor — the heart of merchant life, where Russian and European trading traditions intertwined in a colorful variety of goods. From here we will head along Nevsky Prospect to learn what the everyday and social life of the capital's public looked like, and why Petersburg fashionistas were in no way inferior to Parisians. You will hear a fascinating story about how the city's silhouettes changed along with fashion. We will discuss the history of the famous top hat and learn about other popular headwear of the 19th century. Next we will pass by one of the symbols of Nevsky Prospect — the Singer Company Building — and learn about the history of the famous entrepreneur and what the Valkyries on the building's facades hold. Turning onto Malaya Konyushennaya Street, we will get acquainted with the legendary Brizaque Fashion House, learn about the relationship between the imperial family and the world of haute couture, and about the professionalism of French couturiers. Then we will stop by the DLT department store and find out why prices here were initially the lowest in Petersburg. Our walk will end in the exquisite Sleptsov Mansion at 9 Bolshaya Konyushennaya Street, where we will be awaited at the cozy fashion boutique "Le Pompon" — a true point of attraction for connoisseurs of beauty, where you can feel the atmosphere of Petersburg chic and elegance. Buying anything here is optional; it is enough to see how carefully fashion traditions are preserved and continued. Don't miss the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of imperial fashionistas and hear the living stories of Petersburg's main fashion houses.
