More about this excursion

My private excursion will introduce you to Kronstadt — a unique fortress with a system of forts and a 'city of military glory' on Kotlin Island in the Gulf of Finland. Kronstadt has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1990. In Soviet times, the city was closed to visitors. We will drive along the dam, see the complex of protective structures connecting the island to the mainland, and I will tell you about the history of the defensive forts. We will explore Anchor Square and visit St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral — the largest naval cathedral of the Russian Empire and the key stop of our excursion! Inside the cathedral, black and white memorial plaques bear the names of more than a thousand officers who died in naval battles, and rare icons are displayed. We will find out why Kronstadt is called the miniature Saint Petersburg, see the Blue Bridge, the Obvodny Canal, the Summer Garden, the monument to Peter the Great, the Admiralty, the world's only monument to the sprat fish, and the 'navel of the Earth'! Kronstadt is a city of innovations! You will learn about round-the-world expeditions sent from here, the unique discoveries of Professor Popov, the first ferry line, and the diver training school! I work in tandem with photographer Olya, who will take unforgettable photos and video sketches of our walks. I look forward to seeing you on my excursion.

St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral

We will visit St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral, the last and largest of the naval cathedrals built in the Russian Empire. It was erected in 1903-1913 in the neo-Byzantine style according to the project of the architect Vasily Antonovich Kosyakov. Returning from campaigns, sailors had to see the church dome from afar, like a lighthouse!

- I recommend wearing comfortable shoes and considering the weather conditions (it is often windy and rainy on Kotlin Island, so it is better to take an umbrella or raincoat); - We recommend that women take a scarf with them for visiting the cathedral.
